It has to be reported that our Dora's mother is very ill. That is very hard for our Dora, especially because the relationship with her parents was not so easy. We also want to include in our prayer the request for the right help for her mother. Moreover we want to put in a plea for our Anni and Lini's mother, who will arrive here on Saturday.
If we would draw everything together, I would still like to go into one point that our beloved Hedi Sander mentioned: the destiny of children. Under the influence of the anthroposophical society she had believed in reincarnation, which had been a great comfort to her. When she had been here on the Bruderhof for a few days, she got the idea that little children are lost, because they cannot yet have faith in the great cause. This grieved her heart, as we can well imagine, knowing the fate of her own little child who, according to this, would be lost.
I would like to take this error as a starting point. There is something that can help all of us: Hedi, Dora and her mother, Margot's and Lini's families, the group who are traveling, and our Servant of the Word, and that is the childlike spirit. This alone can help each one of us; this alone is what matters. And if our Hedi finds access to the childlike spirit then she will come through this crisis and find the way. The same is true of all the other matters. Jesus placed a child in the midst of his disciples and said, "If you cannot be like a child, then you cannot come into God's Kingdom." And again it happened that Jesus indicated a child and said, "The Kingdom of God belongs to the children." For this reason the Hutterian brotherhoods have always witnessed that we can only be led into the divine truth if we have a childlike spirit. We can live a life in real community only with a childlike spirit. A true life is possible only with the leading of the childlike spirit. That certainly does not mean that we should not be real men and women, no; for the childlike spirit is not childish, but unites itself with real manhood just as with real womanhood and motherliness. True childlikeness, the childlike spirit, is something that cannot be outdone by anything else. It is the trusting spirit, of confiding trust, of courage and humility, and of endurance, the spirit that rejoices in and loses itself in the object of its love and is released from self contemplation. It is able to give itself completely, unaware of strain and sacrifice, but simply spends itself like children absorbed in play. This spirit bears the mystery of the new birth, the secret of the incarnation, the mystery of Jesus Christ and of manliness and motherliness. It is the spirit of courage, for the true child is not fearful; the true man is not afraid, nor is the true mother. Because the childlike spirit is one of complete trust, it is the spirit of courage, for it is the spirit of love. That is what we wish for all those whose hearts are burdened by those things we spoke of and by other matters not mentioned. Everybody has something in his heart with which he has to fight and struggle. For all this we plead for the answer: the gift of the childlike spirit, which is the Holy Spirit. We must believe that this Spirit really exists and that we can receive it. We do not want to put our request into words but to be gathered in silence and concentrate so that God's voice can speak to us and our inexpressible longing can rise up to Him with all our concerns and needs.
Very few are aware that our Hedi Sander is to undertake a short journey. It is important for all of us to share in every vital matter, for we have come together, most of us, to find a deeper insight into men's calling. If this has once gripped us fully, we take part with the greatest concern, in the life of our fellowmen, especially when they are struck by the truth. According to a letter, to her Ben that she left for him, Hedi had the need to consider what all that means for her. If I have understood her rightly, she feels that here with total commitment the real cause of the Kingdom of God is revealed to men's eyes. And it is shaking to realize what a tremendous thing that is, especially to someone who has accustomed himself to a subjective feeling about his own existence. And it is even more profoundly shaking to someone who has kept in contact with many philosophies of life which have not exactly a claim to absolute truth but have a relative claim to significance, for example, the teachings about transmigration of souls, reincarnation of spirits, and other ideas.
Anyone who has put himself under many such influences and then is suddenly faced with the greatness of God and his burning will, with the reality of God's Kingdom and his rulership, finding in himself a holy "I want" and a holy "I must" out of which to respond to this will of God, can only be shaken to the depths or to the core.
There is hope for him who yet can be shaken.

In der Gemeindestunde, am 10. August 1933. über den kindlichen Geist
Ich möchte noch auf einen Punkt etwas eingehen, den unsere liebe Hedi Sander erwähnte: Das Schicksal der Kinder. Unter dem Einfluss der Anthroposophie hat sie den Gedanken der Wiederverkörperung gehabt, der ja für sie ein grosser Trost bedeutet. Als sie hier einige Tage auf dem Bruderhof war, nahm sie an, dass die kleinen Kinder verloren sind, weil sie nicht an die objektive grosse Sache glauben könnten. Das ging ihr innerlich sehr nah, wie wir uns nach dem Schicksal ihres eigenen Kindchens wohl denken können, dass dieses Kind dann verloren sei.
Ich möchte an diesen Irrttum anknüpfen; denn das, was Hedi und uns allen helfen und dienen kann, das, worauf es einzig und allein ankommt, das ist der kindliche Geist. Und wenn unsere Hedi den Zugang zum kindlichen Geist findet, dann wird sie über diese Krisis hinwegkommen und wird den Weg finden. - Jesus stellt ein Kind in die Mitte seiner Jüngerschar und sagt: Wenn ihr nicht werdet wie dieses Kind, dann könnt ihr nicht in das Reich Gottes kommen. Und wieder geschah es, dass Jesus auf ein Kind hinwies und sagte: Den Kindern gehört das Reich Gottes. Deshalb haben die Brüder, die man die Hutterischen nennt, zu allen Zeiten bezeugt: Wir können nur dann in die göttliche Wahrheit hineingeführt werden, wenn wir den kindlichen Geist haben; wir können nur dann ein wirkliches Gemeinschaftsleben führen, wenn wir den kindlichen Geist haben. Ein wahres Gemeinschaftsleben kann nur in dem kindlichen Geist geführt werden. Das soll freilich nicht heissen, dass wir nicht rechte Männer und Frauen sein sollen, nein; denn der kindliche Geist ist nicht kindisch, sondern der kindliche Geist vereinigt sich mit der rechten Männlichkeit ebenso wohl wie mit der rechten Fraulichkeit und Mü tterlichkeit. Die wahre Kindlichkeit, der kindliche Geist, ist etwas, was durch nichts anderes übertroffen werden kann. Er ist der sich anvertrauende Geist, der Geist

des Muts und der Demut, der Geist des Duldmuts, des sich Freuens und sich Verlierens in den Gegenstand der Liebe, der Geist, der von der Selbstbetrachtung erlöst ist, der sich hinzugeben vermag und nichts von Anstrengung und Opfer dabei empfindet, sondern gleichsam spielend wie die Kinder sich völlig verbraucht. Er ist das Geheimnis der neuen Geburt, das Gehimnis der Menschwerdung, das Geheimnis Jesu Christi, das Geheimnis der Mannhaftigkeit und der Mütterlichkeit. Er ist der Geist der Tapferkeit; denn das wahre Kind fürchtet sich nicht und der wahre Mann fürchtet sich nicht und die wahre Mutter fürchtet sich nicht. Weil der kindliche Geist der voll vertrauende Geist ist, ist er der Geist der Tapferkeit, denn er ist der Geist der Liebe. Das wünschen wir allen den Herzen, die mitbetroffen sind. Jeder hat etwas auf seinem Herzen, womit er zu kämpfen und zu ringen hat. Für das alles erbitten wir die Lösung , das Geschenk der Gabe des kindlichen Geistes, der der heilige Geist ist. Es gilt daran zu glauben, dass dieser Geist wirklich da ist und dass wir ihn aufnehmen können. Wir wollen unsere Bitte nicht in Worte kleiden, sondern in der Stille uns sammeln und konzentrieren, damit Gottes Stimme zu uns sprechen kann und all unser unaussprechliches Seufzen zu Gott emporgetragen wird mit allem, was uns bewegt und worum wir zu bitten haben.
