The Incarnation of God
Fragment, March 23, 1933
Eberhard Arnold . . . Therefore we try to show in our time a life that has been instituted by Jesus Christ, by God, and by his Spirit, a life ruled by the awareness of unity, a life guided by the brotherly justice that consists in appreciating and helping one another. That means confessing to the gospel, the message about God's kingdom--that other, final kingdom in which God alone shall rule with his loving heart.
No one who feels called to this life can go any other way. In this life, the human will, human strength, and human planning are not the decisive elements; the power of the Spirit alone, who comes to us from the other world, makes this life possible. That is why we feel the need to ask everyone who comes to us this question: "Do you have a goal you intend to serve, a purpose you wish to uphold in addition to this cause [we serve], something that fills your heart, that grips your soul and gives meaning to your life, now and forever? If that is the case, we would like to hear from you and listen to what is given through you." . . .
We see the need of soul that people go through everywhere today. We would be happy if we could set up a signpost that clearly shows the way out of this need. We have to be humble about our community and not think we can help out in every need. But we can point to the one and only direction from which help can come, one that leads the way to a world to come, a world that stands in opposition to our present world.
That new era will bring in what is true, because it will bring more than human beings can achieve. It will bring in the incarnation of true human beings [true in the sense of Rom.6:22,23]--something we all lack--which can be ours only when the incarnation of God finds room on the human plane in our midst. [2] We do not want to be anything less than what God has appointed for man, nor do we want to be more than what God has appointed. We want simply to become childlike human beings, and that can be given us. But it will not happen unless we have a higher goal, unless we grasp that the purpose of the incarnation is to make God manifest through the deepest incarnation entering humanity, that is, God becoming man in his Word.
We live in a time when that has become very rare. This incarnation, so simple and small, seems to be lost, and that is why we have to proclaim the gospel, to spread the joyful news: There is an incarnation, but it does not happen unless God's incarnation takes place among us, unless Jesus is born in us, unless his life takes actual form among us. That is the only way.
When this happens, all bitterness will disappear from our lives, and all complaining and lamentation. A true meekness will enter into our lives, and the individual will be humbly thankful that he is allowed to be present when the new incarnation, the new substantiation of Jesus takes place.

Menschwerdung Gottes

. . . Deshalb versuchen wir, mitten in der heutigen Zeit ein Leben hinzustellen, was von Jesus Christus, von Gott und seinem Geist hingestellt wird, ein Leben, welches allein regiert wird aus dem Bewußtsein der Einheit, geführt wird durch die brüderliche Gerechtigkeit gegenseitiger Anerkennung und gegenseitiger Hilfe. Das gilt es zu bekennen als die Nachricht des Reiches Gottes, jenes anderen letzten Reiches, in welchem allein Gott mit dem Herzen seiner Liebe herrschen soll. Wer sich zu diesem Leben berufen fühlt, der kann keinen andern Weg gehen als diesen einen einzigen; denn hier gilt mehr als menschlicher Vorsatz, menschlicher Wille und menschliche Kraft. Dieses Leben ist einzig und allein möglich durch die Kraft des Geistes, der aus der anderen Welt zu uns kommt. Deshalb fühlen wir uns gedrängt, jeden Menschen, der zu uns kommt, zu fragen: Hast du ein Ziel, welchem Du neben diesem Weg dienen willst, eine Sache, welche du neben dieser Sache behaupten willst, was dich erfüllt, dich beseelt, was dein Lebensinhalt ist, jetzt und für ewig? Dann möchten wir dir gerne zuhören, dir lauschen auf das, was dir innerlich gesagt wird.

Man sieht an beidem die seelische Not, in der die Menschen heute überall leben, und wir würden uns glücklich wissen, wenn wir durch einen klaren Wegweiser, den wir aufstellen könnten, einen Weg aus dieser Not aufweisen dürften. Wir wollen uns ja bescheiden, was unsere Gemeinschaft betrifft, wir wollen uns nicht einbilden, als ob wir von unserer Gemeinschaft aus jeder Not helfen könnten. Wir können die Wegrichtung aufdecken, in welcher allein Hilfe aus allen diesen Nöten kommen kann. Diese Wegrichtung führt in eine kommende Welt, die mit der jetzigen Zeit im Widerspruch steht.
Diese Zeit wird erst das Wahre hineinbringen, weil sie mehr bringen wird als das, was Menschen tun können: Die Menschwerdung der Menschen, die uns allen fehlt, kann uns nur dadurch werden, daß die Menschwerdung Gottes in unserer Mitte Platz greift,

wirklich menschlich. [Wir wollen] nicht etwas werden, was unterhalb dessen steht, was Gott den Menschen aufgetragen hat und auch nicht, was über dem steht, was Gott den Menschen aufgetragen hat, sondern etwas einfach kindlich Menschliches, das allein kann uns gegeben werden. Das wird uns nur dann gegeben werden, wenn wir ein höheres Ziel haben, erst dann, wenn uns klar wird: Die Menschwerdung ist dazu da, daß Gott offenbar wird, indem die tiefste Menschwerdung in die Menschheit eingeht, indem Gott in seinem Wort Mensch wird.
Wir leben heute in einer Zeit, in welcher das überaus selten geworden ist. Und beides mutet uns an wie ein Notschrei, daß dieses Einfache und Kleine, die Menschwerdung, verloren scheint, und da haben wir das Evangelium zu verkündigen, die Nachricht der Freude zu geben: Es gibt eine Menschwerdung, aber nur so, daß Gottes Menschwerdung unter uns Platz greift, daß Jesus in uns geboren wird, daß das Leben Jesu unter uns in Menschwerdung Platz greift. Das ist der einzige Weg.
Dann wird auch alle Bitterkeit aus unserm Leben verschwinden, auch alles Klagen und Jammern, und es wird eine Bescheidung eintreten, eine wirkliche Bescheidung, daß der einzelne dankbar ist, wenn er dabei sein kann, wenn die neue Menschwerdung, die neue Verleiblichung des Jesus stattfinden darf. Es muß uns freilich klar sein . . . .
