Free Will and Absolute Responsibility Gemeindestunde, Rhön Bruderhof, April 20, 1933 (during an epidemic of scarlet fever)
(Eberhard Arnold): . . . We know that there are germs of death in all of us, that we are not immortal gods but mortal men, and there is no possibility for us to protect ourselves with complete success from the germs of death by making our health and natural disposition more robust, or by taking antidotes and measures of isolation. There is no protection within our power, no protection that is fully valid. Nevertheless it is our duty to do our utmost in this sphere, to be very faithful and very careful that we do not become guilty of a death through negligence. I hope we will be completely unanimous in this, and we will confirm it later in the brotherhood: that we must make a very great effort, by isolating this case of illness from the other children, in order to avoid death through carelessness.
Here we face the same question as in conversion and turning to God. It is God who brings about both the will and the deed in us. We have not of ourselves the strength of will to leave the bad and do the good. But God gives us the strength of will, and then he lays the responsibility upon us to act according to it. That is the state of affairs which many people find too hard to grasp; they cannot get over this difficulty. "God brings about the will in you; now work out your own salvation with fear and trembling." God gives you the will; now act in the strength of it. That is God's secret. We are co-workers with God, and yet [2] we can do nothing in our own strength. We are sent to speak his word and to live his word, yet it is only the Holy Spirit, who gives the word power. . . . That is God's secret. Each human being and each child must be awakened in his own deepest heart by the Holy Spirit; yet in reverence before God we are sent to tell men and to educate chidren and bring them the Gospel. It is not we who shall speak when hauled before magistrates; the Father's Spirit will speak there. But the Father's Spirit gives us the words we are to say. Grasp it who can.
In this way we are God's instruments, but yet not almighty gods; thus we are God's vessels, but yet not deified creatures. We are instruments, but not those who use these instruments; it is God who wants to have this instrument in his hand. We are not just instruments made of dead wood and dead catgut, but living beings redeemed and filled with the Spirit, who no longer have any self-will, beings with whom God brings forth his music as the hand calls forth wonderful harmonies from a harp. . . . Free will and full responsibility of man, and yet the almighty working of God--that is the mystery of grace, of responsibility for the church community, for the unity of the community. That is the secret of our watchfulness and our faithfulness, also with regard to illness and with regard to all that seeks to cause death. God remains Lord over life and death, but God wants us to be faithful and careful and humble in the strength of his will, knowing that death lies in ambush around us, and he wants us to use simple means to prevent the spreading of the epidemic.
If we are faithful and humble in this, we may leave all that follows [in trust] to God. We also do not have the authority to demand that none of us die, for it has been appointed that we die, and if some rather set their faith in being transported [to heaven], that is a different kind of dying. We do not even have the right to ask with firm expectation that our children and babies will not die in their childlike nature. We do not know from what they may be protected by an early death. We do not know what God has in mind for them when he takes them early, very early into eternity. But it is our task to pray that he may again accept us and all children entrusted to us to serve on our earth, not in order that we keep the children, but that the task may be laid on them too.
It is like this then: that these children, or those still to be affected, are given afresh and completely to God and his kingdom, to Christ and his church; that we praise God with sincere hearts that these children--if they are to be strong and healthy again--are brought up and surrendered more deeply, more fully than ever, for God's kingdom, for the church of Jesus Christ: not for us and not for themselves. That is what concerns us today, that and much more that is deeply connected with it.
Because of this we want with special earnestness to come before God's face with the request that all grown-ups and all little children and young people among us may be accepted anew, accepted anew in the holy service of the whole Gospel of all creatures, as unworthy instruments, yet as such as are to be appointed by God to his holy cause in these dangerous last times.
[P.S. As far as I can remember, we had an epidemic of scarlet fever among the children that lasted till June. Edith Arnold, nee Boecker, was the last serious case. She had to spend six weeks in Tata's cabin. Marianne Zimmermann]

FREIER WILLE UND VOELLIGSTE VERANTWORTUNG
GEMENDESTUNDE 20 April 1933
(waehrend einer Scharlachepidemie)
(Eberhard Arnold)

- - -
Höchst wahrscheinlich nicht E.A. sondern Hans Boller.
